Apples – Most apples can be used in creating a flavorful cider. I love using a variety of Gala, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and Fuji.
Oranges – I love using Navel because they are most accessible year-round. Although, the fall time is a wonderful time to source them from a local orchard. The flavor and smell from local orchards is unmatched!
Cinnamon Sticks – I purchase all my cinnamon sticks in bulk 🙂 and keep them sealed in an airtight container for maximum freshness.
Whole Allspice – Whole allspice is pretty inexpensive to source. Most grocers sell them and I bought my allspice for under $3!
Whole Cloves – Whole cloves are a bit more expense to source in my experience. Finding a bulk section (like Spouts) might be your best bet.
Filtered Water – Keep all the chemicals and impurities out by using filtered or distilled water only. You’ll achieve the most pure taste.
Brown Sugar – Brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, or granulated sugar will work to sweeten the apple cider without discoloring it.
How To Make Apple Cider Using The Crock-Pot®
It’s SO incredibly simple you’ll wonder why you ever bought the one from the store.
Quarter the apples and oranges. Place them into the Crock-Pot® along with cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and whole all spice.
Pour filtered water just until it’s about 1 inch from the rim of the ceramic bowl. Place the lid on. Set the temperature to LOW and time to 6 hours. Press START and sit back to smell the cozy aroma.
At the 5 hour mark, use a potato masher or a wooden spoon to mash the apples and oranges to release all of their juices. Place the lid back on and cook for one more hour.
Strain the apple cider through a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth. Sweeten with brown sugar (or maple syrup). Pour, sip, and enjoy!

Yes. Most apples can be used in creating a flavorful cider. I love using a variety of Gala, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and Fuji.
2. What kind of equipment do I need to make homemade apple cider?
I’m using my Crock-Pot® Programmable 7-Quart Cook & Carry Slow Cooker with Sous Vide to slow cook and let the flavors simmer together. This Crock-Pot® has a cook and carry locking lid, so it makes it easy to transport and prevents leaks/spills. The spacious 7-quart design offers more usable cooking space, with a generous base for larger cuts of meat and family-size meals, making it ideal for the holidays.
