How To Roast Garlic

I had my first experience with roasted garlic in a rustic loaf of bread years ago and didn’t think highly of it. My second experience was more recently and that was I had my individual pizza topped with roasted garlic. That about did it to me. I went from a 0 to 100 overnight. And now if I can put roasted garlic on it or in it, it’s going to happen!

With cooler weather, I’ve been making loafs of rustic dutch oven bread to go alongside a bowl of soup. One of the variations I made was with roasted garlic. When I was ready to bake the dough, I took about 20 cloves of the roasted garlic and tucked it into the dough, shaped it, and baked it. The home smelled like fresh bread and caramelized garlic. And just like this, I’ve been finding ways to use and incorporate these magical pieces of garlic.

A few other ways that roasted garlic can be used:

  • chopped and placed into a soup
  • blended into a soup
  • bread baking (read above note)
  • salad topping
  • pizza topping
  • sandwich topping
  • dips
  • salad dressing/vinaigrette
  • pasta topping
  • meat marinades

The possibilities here are endless! One thing is sure, no more boring, bland flavor!

How To Roast Garlic

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour 15 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 heads of garlic
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Cut 1/2 inch from the top portion of the garlic head (the opposite side from the root end). This will expose the garlic cloves.

  3. Line a small, oven-safe baking dish or pan with a large piece of foil. Make sure you have extra foil on the sides, this will be used to cover the garlic.

  4. Arrange the heads of garlic in the baking dish with the exposed garlic cloves facing up.

  5. Drizzle olive oil on the garlic and sprinkle with salt. Use the extra foil on the sides of the baking dish to cover the garlic, this will prevent the garlic from burning.

  6. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool before handling. Squeeze the garlic cloves to remove them from their skin, they should come out easily.
