Sweet Honey Sesame Tofu Stir Fry

To Make This Delicious Tofu Stir Fry

Start with prepping the tofu.

It’s important to press the tofu and remove the liquid, otherwise, it will take longer to crisp up when frying and will not absorb the sauce well.

I press the tofu with anything heavy I find in my kitchen that I can use as a weight, like skillets or baking dishes. If you cook with tofu frequently, it might be worth it to purchase a tofu press.

Dice the tofu into cubes. Lay out a ton of paper towels on a plate or baking sheet. Then, arrange the tofu onto your plate. On top of that, lay out more paper towels. And last, place something heavy on top that will press down on the tofu. This process takes about 10-15 minutes. Once the tofu is done being pressed, it will feel more dry and slightly lighter. Now it’s ready to be used.

For The Stir Fry

Combine cornstarch and tofu in ziplock bag, seal it, and shake it up real good until the tofu is well coated in the cornstarch. DON’T skip this step! The cornstarch helps the tofu crisp up into this beautiful golden color and texture when being fried. This is so worth the extra step!

Next, pan fry the tofu until golden and crunchy. Sauté the red bell pepper. And last, pour the sweet honey sesame sauce and cook it all together until the flavors come together like a real love story.

Ingredients

Stir Fry

  • 1 pound firm tofu
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp sesame seed oil, divided
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch squares
  • 2 tbsp scallions, sliced (for garnish)

Sweet Honey Sesame Sauce

  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds (plus additional for garnish)

Instructions

Press The Tofu

  1. Cut tofu into 1/2 inch cubes. Arrange on a paper towel-lined plate or baking sheet; top with more paper towels. Lay another plate on top. Put a heavy pan or a cast iron skillet on top to weigh it down. This will remove excess liquid from the tofu and the tofu will better absorb the honey sesame sauce. Let stand for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, prep the sauce.

  1. Stir all the sauce ingredients together and set aside. 

Stir Fry

  1. Combine cornstarch and tofu in ziplock bag, seal, and shake it up until tofu is well coated.

  2. Heat 1 tbsp sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook tofu until crisp, 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from pan and set aside.

  3. In the same pan, add 1 tbsp sesame oil and red bell pepper. Sauté for about 2 minutes. Transfer the tofu back to the skillet and pour honey sesame sauce over it. Stir to coat all ingredients. Cook for 3-5 minutes, sauce will thicken up. If sauce thickens up too much, add a splash of soy sauce to loosen it up.

  4. Remove from heat and garnish with extra sesame seeds and chopped scallions. Serve over a bowl of jasmine rice or a bed of steamed veggies like broccoli (to keep it gluten-free and low carb).
